Renewal for the Portland Audubon Campus

Audubon House and the Administrative Offices were last renovated 27 years ago, to accommodate a burgeoning staff of 16. Since then, staffing has more than doubled and the metro region has increased by more than one million people. Add to that the 150 volunteers working weekly at our campus and 40,000 annual visitors, and it’s clear that more efficient and educational space is needed to accomplish our goals.

Educational programs, day camps, lectures, interpretation, advocacy, rehabilitation, and administration are all taking place in buildings designed decades ago for a smaller organization. With your help, Portland Audubon’s buildings will be renewed and revitalized to help us better serve our members, volunteers, youth, and the public.

A Better Visitor Experience for You

Our sanctuary is our most important tool for connecting people to nature and educating the public. Through this project, we can reimagine what inclusive education and public engagement looks and feels like to ensure our Wildlife Sanctuary is welcoming to all people.

  1. Accessible Trail: A new ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant bird viewing deck.

  2. Inclusive Signage and Education Displays: We are reimagining our signage and interpretive displays through the entire sanctuary to create a more welcoming and educational visitor experience.

  3. Demonstration Projects: By creating a Backyard Habitat demonstration garden, bird-safe windows, and a green roof on our new Wildlife Care Center, we can teach people how to incorporate green practices into their daily lives.

  1. Nature Store Remodel: Update our Nature Store for a better shopping experience.

  2. Office Remodels: Improved offices for our staff to be able to conduct their work.

  3. Updates to Interiors: New and refinished flooring, painting, skylights, and drywall, improving important a areas like our classrooms and gathering spaces.

  4. Updates to Exteriors and Safety: New siding, improved lighting, and security cameras, as well as secure bicycle parking and traffic safety infrastructure.

Engaging the Public

Every visitor is an opportunity to advance our efforts to protect wildlife and their habitat. A great experience at Portland Audubon can convert visitors to members and supporters, helping to continue our legacy of inspiring people to love and protect the natural world. We want to provide a better sense of place for visitors and convey our essential work in conservation, education, rehabilitation, and engaging all communities with nature. New landscaping and compelling signage will guide visitors as they explore our wildlife sanctuary and learn how they can get involved with conservation.

The Portland Audubon Campus also serves as a primary entrance to Forest Park and a vital information link for the general public. For the foreseeable future, Portland Audubon will be performing the community service of orienting visitors to Forest Park.
